Key Changes in Air Transportation of Lithium-ion Batteries

In a recent development at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) dangerous goods panel meeting, a consensus was reached to implement a State of Charge (SoC) requirement of 30% for a broader range of lithium-ion batteries during air transportation.

The change specifically targets lithium-ion batteries packed with equipment, where the battery is included in the same box as the device. Presently, the SoC requirement only pertains to standalone lithium-ion batteries transported by air.

This change is significant, particularly given the growing concerns about the safety of shipping lithium batteries, especially considering their increasing volume and size.
