Ensuring Safety in Hazardous Shipping: NNR USA’s Commitment to Dangerous Goods Regulations

Shipping Dangerous Goods

Since 2010, NNR Global Logistics USA has maintained a robust Dangerous Goods shipping policy, expertly crafted and overseen by our National Security Manager, Carl Blumenstein. Our policy is in place to help protect all individuals who may or may not know the relevant regulations and hazards involved in handling and shipping hazardous materials.

Every day, we’re exposed to hazardous materials that may seem harmless but carry significant risk – think aerosol spray cans, propane, gasoline, oils, solvents, weed killer, rodent repellent, or even nail polish. The potential consequences of mishandling these materials are not to be underestimated.

Regarding airfreight, Dangerous Goods regulations are set by IATA (International Air Transport Association), which provides strict rules for hazmat transported by passenger and all-cargo aircraft. History has shown tragic examples of accidental and deliberate destruction of aircraft, leading to loss of life both in the air and on the ground. The TSA (Transportation Security Administration) also plays an essential role in preventing these incidents by vetting shippers and screening cargo before it loads onto any aircraft.

Imagine you’re on a family vacation, and suddenly, there’s a fire, explosion, or dangerous chemical leak aboard your flight. Such a disaster could put everyone on board and those on the ground at serious risk.  That’s why our policy is centered on one simple idea: safety first. A chemical spill, for instance, can cause severe health problems – from headaches and nausea to long-term damage like respiratory issues or even birth defects. Safety is our top priority, and we are committed to ensuring it in all our operations.

NNR’s compliance team meticulously reviews each shipment’s safety data sheets to decide whether NNR can handle a product. Ocean freight might seem less restrictive but is regulated by the IMO (International Maritime Organization.) The recent August explosion of organic peroxides at the Port of Ningbo caused devastating damage and is a reminder of the importance of following protocols. The Port closed for several days during the investigation and the party responsible for shipping the cargo at fault may face severe consequences.

Our program also helps shippers stay compliant with these regulations.   Even minor infractions- like improper labeling or packaging – can lead to costly delays or accidents. Dangerous goods training is mandatory for NNR employees involved in shipping hazardous goods. We provide personal protective equipment (PPE), such as goggles, gloves, aprons, and particle masks, to ensure the well-being of our staff.

Our policy isn’t just about compliance; it’s about the safety of people, communities, and the environment. By staying diligent and adhering to guidelines, we ensure safe and uninterrupted operations at NNR. Your safety is our top priority, and we are committed to maintaining it in all our operations.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we work together to handle dangerous goods safely.
