A report released this week highlighted the growing threat of cyber-attacks disrupting shipping supply chains. However, one expert pointed out to The Loadstar that, despite the geopolitical factors, it is cargo owners – rather than shipowners – who should be most concerned.

According to a survey conducted by Thetius, CyberOwl and HFW, 25% of respondents lacked cyber-risk insurance, while an additional 42% were unaware that such insurance even existed. This highlights a significant gap in cyber-security awareness within the shipping industry.

Cyber-attacks on shoreside offices and infrastructure are typically in the form of ransomware, which involves malicious code designed to encrypt a company’s server data. Attackers then demand a ransom to unlock the data, causing disruptions to businesses and their operations.
