On February 3, 2025, a conversation between U.S. President Trump and Mexico’s President Sheinbaum, resulted in an agreement to pause tariffs for one month.

Sheinbaum said on X, “Mexico will immediately reinforce the northern border with 10,000 members of the National Guard to prevent drug trafficking from Mexico to the U.S., particularly fentanyl.”

Trump confirmed on Truth Social, “We further agreed to immediately pause the anticipated tariffs for a one-month period during which we will have negotiations headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and high-level Representatives of Mexico.”

The tariffs on goods of Mexico, at an additional 25%, were to go into effect on February 4, 2025. For more information on the original announcement, New Tariffs on Goods of Canada, Mexico, and China Begin February 4.
