Top carriers split over the future of shipping fuels

The top 10 largest container shipping lines are gradually shifting away from traditional fuels, with an emerging split between LNG and methanol as preferred alternatives. According to Alphaliner, the orderbooks for vessels set for delivery from 2027 onward are predominantly filled with ships running on either LNG or methanol. However, China’s Cosco and Japan’s ONE remain slower in adopting these changes, positioning themselves behind the trend.

A key development is Maersk’s strategic shift. Initially firm in its stance that only methanol could meet its ambitious decarbonisation goals, Maersk has recently reversed course and now supports LNG as a viable pathway for reducing emissions.
